Brussels, 16 October 2012/ ACP: The Zambian Embassy communicated the passing of Her Excellency the former First Lady of Zambia Mrs. Betty Kaunda, which occurred on Tuesday 18 September.

According to reports, the late First Lady had gone to visit her daughter in Harare, Zimbabwe, where she died peacefully in her sleep. She was age 84.

As First Lady of Zambia, the late Betty Kaunda was known to be a woman of virtue and modesty who was the strength behind her husband, Dr. Kenneth David Kaunda, Founding Father President of Zambia.

Fondly named ‘Mama Betty’, she was a loving mother and a devoted wife who wanted very much to live an ordinary life, although she ultimately lived at State House during the years 1964 to 1991. Together with her husband, they stood for humanism, justice and peace – for the liberation of Southern Africa from all forms of colonialism and racism.

The ACP Secretariat has signed the book of condolence at the Zambian Embassay and the Secretary General Dr. Mohamed Ibn Chambas has since sent a letter of condolence to the Government of Zambia.
