Brussels, 19 October 2015/ ACP: The Secretary-General of the African, Caribbean and Pacific Group of States H.E Dr. Patrick Gomes conveyed his condolences on behalf of the ACP Group to the Government and people of Benin, following the death of distinguished statesman and former President, H.E. General Mathieu Kerekou on October 14th.

The Secretary-General described General Kerekou, who served as President of Benin from 1972 to 1991 and then from 1996 to 2006, as “a man of quality and conviction, dedicated to the unity and cohesion of the people of his country”.

In a letter addressed to the President of Benin H.E. Dr. Boni Yayi, the Secretary-General highlighted the late leader’s significant contributions to building peace and democracy in the country.

“His Excellency General Mathieu Kerekou was a forerunner in initiating the first Conference of the Vital Forces of the Nation, which has enabled Benin to be cited as a successful democratic model for the African continent. He attached particular importance to strengthening cooperation between the ACP countries and those of the European Union,” stated the Secretary-General, and reiterated his solidarity during this time of mourning.
