Statement of the Secretary-General of the OACPS on the political and security situation in the Central African Region
Brussels, 01 February 2021/OACPS:On behalf of the Organisation of African, Caribbean and Pacific States (OACPS), the Secretary-General, H.E. Mr Georges Rebelo Pinto Chikoti, welcomed the mini-Summit of leaders of the International Conference on the Great Lakes Region (ICGLR), which took place in Luanda, Republic of Angola on 29 January 2021, to discuss the political and security situation in the Central African Republic (CAR).
The Summit, which was held on the invitation of His Excellency, MrJoão Manuel GonçalvesLourenço, President of the Republic of Angola and President-in-Office of the ICGLR, reiterated the validity of the recent Presidential elections in the CAR of 27 December 2020 that re-elected H.E. MrFaustin Archange Touaderaas President of the Central African Republic.
The Secretary-General supports the outcome of the Mini-Summit, which called on all rebel forces in the conflict-driven Central African Republic to agree to a cease-fire. H.E. Mr Chikoti stated that it will be in the interest of all to have a Great Lakes region that is without armed conflict, without death, or forced displacement of inhabitants. He reiterates that conflict has an impact on peace, stability and security, and hinders the sustainable and inclusive development of Members of the OACPS.
The Secretary-General welcomes the initiatives and efforts of the Economic Community of Central African States (ECCAE) and the ICGLR to promote inclusive dialogue among all actors in the CAR, and he applauds the commitment of leaders of the ICGLR to hold another Mini-Summit on the political and security situation in the CAR within 10 days. Further, H.E. Mr Chikoti also callS for the continued support to the mission of the United Nations Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in the Central African Republic (MINUSCA).
