STATEMENT BY THE SECRETARY-GENERAL OF THE ORGANISATION OF AFRICAN, CARIBBEAN AND PACIFIC STATES ON THE ELECTIONS IN THE REPUBLIC OF SEYCHELLES
Brussels, 04 November 2020/OACPS: On behalf of the Organisation of African, Caribbean and Pacific States (OACPS), the Secretary-General, H.E. Mr. Georges Rebelo Pinto CHIKOTI, welcomes the successful conduct of the presidential and parliamentary elections held in the Republic of Seychelles from 22-24 October 2020.
The Secretary-General congratulates His Excellency Mr. Wavel Ramkalawan on his accession to the Presidency and pledges the support of the OACPS. He commends the former President, H.E. Mr. Danny Faure, for accepting the results of the elections and for having demonstrated, throughout his tenure, the qualities of a true statesman.
H.E. Mr. Chikoti applauds the people of the Republic of Seychelles on the holding of free and fair elections, which confirms their commitment to democratic ideals and principles. He recalls that the Seychelles remains a bastion of democracy, which should be preserved. Indeed, the conduct of these elections confirms the tradition of the peaceful and transparent transfer of power in strict compliance with the constitution.
The Secretary-General conveys his best wishes to the President and wishes him every success in this new mandate. He also reiterates his commitment to working with him in the pursuit of the OACPS’ agenda, in accordance with the values set out in the revised Georgetown Agreement of 2019.
