Brussels, 2 November 2020/OACPS: On behalf of the Organisation of African, Caribbean and Pacific States (OACPS), the Secretary-General, H.E. Mr. Georges Rebelo Pinto CHIKOTI, congratulates the People of the United Republic of Tanzania for their contribution to the strengthening of the democratic process by exercising their right to vote in a peaceful manner during the general elections, held on 28 October 2020.

The Secretary-General congratulates the incumbent, H.E. Mr. John Pombe Magufuli on his election for a second term as President of the United Republic of Tanzania. He salutes the people of Tanzania and all the presidential candidates for their demonstrated commitment to a smooth election despite the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic.

H.E. Mr. Chikoti is nonetheless concerned by the tensions in the country following the elections and calls on all stakeholders to put the interests of the people first and seek inclusive solutions. He further calls on all parties to resolve all electoral grievances through the legal channels provided by the constitution.

The Secretary-General appreciates the leadership provided by the United Republic of Tanzania during its current tenure as Chair of the OACPS Council of Ministers (01 August 2020 – 31 January 2021). He extends his best wishes to H.E. President Magufuli and looks forward to continuing the cooperation to achieve the objectives of the OACPS and to promote the interests of the Members of the organization.
