Statement by the Secretary-General of the OACPS on the presidential elections in the Republic of Malawi
Brussels, 01 July 2020/OACPS: On behalf of the Organisation of African, Caribbean and Pacific States (OACPS), the Secretary-General, H.E. Mr. Georges Rebelo Pinto Chikoti, commends the Government and People of the Republic of Malawi for the smooth and peaceful elections, which were held on June 23, 2020.
The Secretary-General congratulates H.E Dr. Lazarus Chakwera, President of the Republic of Malawi, on his accession to the Presidency of the Republic of Malawi and takes this opportunity to pay homage to the outgoing President, H. E. Prof. Arthur Peter Mutharika for his acceptance in good faith of the results of the elections, and for having demonstrated statesmanship throughout his term of office.
The OACPS is committed to supporting democracy and promoting the rule of law, peace and inclusive governance in Members of the OACPS. The Organisation applauds the People of the Republic of Malawi for their massive turnout at the polls which reaffirms the strength of Malawi’s democracy.
In accordance with the objectives of its constitutive Act, the revised Georgetown Agreement of 2019, the OACPS reiterates its commitment and support to the People of Malawi in their efforts to strengthen their democratic processes and good governance.
