Brussels, 25 August 2021/OACPS: On behalf of the Organisation of African, Caribbean and Pacific States (OACPS), the Secretary-General, H.E. Mr Georges Rebelo Pinto CHIKOTI, is delighted with the successful conduct of the presidential, legislative and local elections held in the Republic of Zambia on 12 August 2021.

The Secretary-General congratulates His Excellency Hakainde Hichilema on his accession to the Presidency and assures him of the support of the OACPS. He commends the former President, H.E. Mr Edgar Lungu, for displaying, throughout his term-of-office, the qualities of a true statesman.

Applauding the people of the Republic of Zambia for, once again, demonstrating their commitment to democratic ideals and principles through participating in the electoral process in large numbers, H.E. Mr Chikoti noted that Zambia has an established tradition of peaceful and transparent transfers of power in strict accordance with its constitution, which should be preserved.

The Secretary-General conveys his best wishes to H.E. President Hichilema as he is sworn in, and wishes him every success in this new mandate. Secretary-General Chikoti also reiterates his commitment to working with President Hichilema and his new Government in the pursuit of the agenda of the OACPS, in line with the goals and values set out in the revised Georgetown Agreement of 2019.
