New website launched for Sustainable Development of Fisheries and Aquaculture Value Chains in ACP Countries
Brussels, 9 December 2020/OACPS: The website of the Fish4ACP Programme, an initiative of the European Union (EU), the Organisation of African, Caribbean and Pacific States (OACPS) and the Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations (FAO), is now live. Hosted by the FAO, the website supports the Programme’s efforts to increase the sustainability of aquaculture value chains in the Member States of the OACPS.
Led by the OACPS with funding from the 11th European Development Fund (EDF) with additional contributions fromthe German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), the “FISH4ACP Sustainable Development of Fisheries and Aquaculture Value Chains in ACP countries” (Fish4ACP) Programme is implemented by FAO.
The €40 million value chain programme, the first specific action to be implemented under the OACPS’ Strategic Plan for Fisheries and Aquaculture was launched during the 6th Meeting of African, Caribbean and Pacific Ministers in charge of Fisheries and Aquaculture in Apia, Samoa in September 2019, with the official signing for the Programme taking place during the UN Oceans Conference in Oslo in 2019.
The Fish4ACP Programme aims to tackle some of the underlying challenges in building sustainable fisheries and aquaculture, which include low economic performance, limited market access and poor social and environmental sustainability. The Programme aims to contribute to food and nutrition security, economic prosperity and job creation by ensuring sustainable fisheries and aquaculture value chains in selected African, Caribbean and Pacific countries. The programme is focused on enhancing the productivity and competitiveness of value chains, while ensuring that economic improvements go hand-in-hand with environmental sustainability and social inclusiveness.
The FISH4ACP programme works with twelve value chains in twelve Member States across the three main regions of the OACPS, paying special attention to small and medium-sized businesses, especially those which support women and young people.
