LIBREVILLE, Gabon — President Brice Clotaire Oligui Nguema received the Secretary-General of the Organisation of African, Caribbean and Pacific States (OACPS), H.E. Moussa Saleh Batraki, in the Gabonese capital for high-level discussions on economic development and regional cooperation. The visit forms part of Secretary-General Batraki’s official mission to the Central African region.

The meeting followed President Nguema’s invitation to Secretary-General Batraki to attend his presidential inauguration on 3 May. Discussions centred on Gabon’s ongoing efforts to diversify its economy by strengthening domestic processing industries and reducing reliance on raw material exports.

President Nguema highlighted the outcomes of recent national consultations, which have led to increased government pressure on raw material operators to invest in local value chains and job creation. These measures signal a strategic shift toward value-added production and sustainable economic development.

Secretary-General Batraki underscored the importance of addressing outstanding financial contributions to enable the OACPS to function effectively and advance the collective interests of its Member States. President Nguema expressed Gabon’s strong support for the Organisation’s reform agenda and pledged his country’s active engagement in the process.

The Gabonese Head of State also commended President Teodoro Obiang Nguema Mbasogo of Equatorial Guinea for agreeing to host the upcoming OACPS Summit of Heads of State and Government in Malabo, scheduled to take place before the end of 2025.

As a gesture of regional solidarity, President Nguema agreed to chair the Investors and Private Sector Forum that will precede the summit. The forum aims to mobilise strong participation from private sector stakeholders across the Global South.

The meeting reaffirmed Gabon’s commitment to internal economic transformation and to advancing the shared priorities of the OACPS through strengthened regional cooperation.
