Objectives

Objectives of the Organisation of African, Caribbean and Pacific States (OACPS)

As defined by the revised Georgetown Agreement (2019), the objectives of the OACPS are to:

  1. Promote development and trade
    Support the efforts of Member States to eradicate poverty, achieve sustainable development, and fully benefit from the advantages of trade through gradual and more effective participation in the world economy.

  2. Strengthen unity and solidarity
    Foster unity and solidarity among Member States, while also enhancing understanding among their peoples.

  3. Consolidate peace and stability
    Strengthen and maintain peace and stability as a prerequisite for improving the well-being of peoples in a democratic and free environment.

  4. Deepen cooperation and integration
    Enhance economic, political, social, and cultural relations among Member States through regional integration, strategic partnerships, and inter-regional cooperation in areas such as trade, science and technology, industry, transport and communications, education, training and research, information and communication, the environment, demography, and human resources.

  5. Advance sustainable policies
    Promote policies, particularly in environmental protection and the rational management of natural resources, to ensure the sustainable development of Member States.

  6. Act as a common forum
    Serve as a platform for formulating and coordinating common positions on global issues.

  7. Advocate for fair multilateralism
    Promote a multilateral system that is fair, equitable, and rules-based, contributing to economic growth and sustainable development of Member States.

  8. Develop global partnerships
    Build strategic relations with external partners—within the global South and with regional and international organisations—to foster global consensus on South-South and Triangular Cooperation.

  9. Strengthen political identity
    Enhance the political identity of the OACPS to enable it to act as a coherent political force in international fora and ensure its specific interests are duly recognised.

  10. Reinforce political dialogue
    Promote dialogue within the OACPS to consolidate unity and solidarity among its Members.

  11. Prevent and resolve conflicts
    Strengthen regional mechanisms for conflict prevention, management, and peaceful resolution, through cooperation among Member States and with other States.
