On his second day of high-level outreach to the Republic of Sierra Leone, His Excellency Mr. Moussa S. Batraki, the Secretary-General of the Organization of African, Caribbean, and Pacific States, engaged with the country’s political leadership. During his meeting with the Deputy Minister of Health, Dr. Charles Senessie, the Ministry expressed appreciation for the work of the OACPS and the support received through the EU-OACPS partnership. Both parties discussed opportunities for cooperation, particularly in the Ministry of Health’s four main thematic areas: primary health care, secondary care, referral systems, and a robust outreach program.
The Secretary-General also made a courtesy call to Mrs. Princess Dugba, the Minister of Fisheries and Marine Resources. During the visit, they discussed how to leverage the Organization of African, Caribbean, and Pacific States (OACPS) to complete the certification of Sierra Leone’s fish industry, enabling access to the European Union market. The Minister shared the Ministry’s strategic paper, which outlines Sierra Leone’s priorities that the OACPS could use to promote the “Feed Salone” initiative.
During a courtesy call on the Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, Dr. Theriser Tenneh Dick discussed with the Secretary-General how the OACPS could advocate for support for the Ministry’s six pillars of “Feed Salone.” These pillars include: Mechanization and Irrigation, Aggregation, Processing, and Marketing, Seeds and Input Systems, Empowering Women and Youth, Agricultural Technology, and Climate-Smart Agriculture and Finance.
The Secretary-General also held a high-level engagement with the Speaker of Parliament, Rt. Hon. Segepoh Solomon Thomas, and the ACP-EU parliamentary delegation. Fruitful discussions were held on the ratification of the Samoa Agreement and the continued support for the work of the OACPS. The Secretary-General also met the Minister of Finance and the Minister of Information and was assured of Sierra Leone’s continued support.
